How to Choose the Right Photographer for Your Wedding

Choosing the right photographer for your wedding is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when planning your big day. After all, your wedding photos will be the lasting reminders of the love, joy, and celebration shared with your partner and your loved ones.
But with so many photographers out there, how do you find the one that’s perfect for you?

As a luxury wedding photographer with an editorial and documentary style, I’ve worked with countless couples over the past 15 years, helping them capture their dream day in a way that’s elegant, authentic, and timeless. Below, I’ll guide you through the key questions to ask and considerations to keep in mind when choosing your photographer.

1. What is Your Photography Style?

Wedding photography isn’t one-size-fits-all. Some photographers focus on traditional posed portraits, while others specialise in candid, storytelling images. My style blends the best of both worlds: editorial elegance with a documentary approach. This means I’ll artfully capture the big, breathtaking moments as well as the quiet, emotional details – ensuring your photos feel both luxurious and genuine.

When choosing your photographer, ask yourself:

• Do I prefer posed or candid shots?

• Do I want my photos to have a modern, artistic feel, or a more classic look?

• Does their portfolio resonate with me emotionally?

2. Can We See a Full Wedding Gallery?

A photographer’s Instagram or website will showcase their best work, but it’s essential to see a complete wedding gallery. This gives you a sense of how they capture the full day – from the getting-ready moments to the dance floor celebrations.

When you look at my galleries, you’ll see consistent storytelling throughout the day. I aim to tell the full story of your wedding, weaving the luxurious details with heartfelt, spontaneous moments to create a collection of images that feels cohesive and personal.

3. What’s Included in Your Packages?

Understanding what’s included in your photographer’s packages is key to avoiding surprises later. Some questions to ask include:

• How many hours of coverage are included?
• Do you offer a second shooter?
• Are albums or prints part of the package?

I work closely with each couple to create a package tailored to their needs. Whether you want full-day coverage or bespoke albums to treasure forever, I’m here to ensure every detail is exactly as you envision. As a standard for each of my packages - I do not put a limit on photographs, you won’t get 100 images from the day, you will get all the images that tell your wedding day story. These images will be carefully edited in my unique style and added to a password protected online gallery - you can then share this with family and friends if you wish. Each gallery has its own shop attached where you can purchase prints and albums - these can either be designed by yourself or I can do this for you.

4. What’s Your Approach on the Wedding Day?

Every photographer has a unique way of working. Some are very hands-on, directing every shot, while others take a more behind-the-scenes approach. My role is to guide you gently when needed – such as during portraits – and blend into the background for the rest of the day, capturing natural, emotional moments as they unfold. If you feel like you need more direction then I am happy to do this, to ensure you get the shots but also enjoy every moment of your day.

Ask your photographer:

• How do you handle group shots or family portraits?
• Will you direct us or let moments happen naturally?
• What’s your plan if the weather doesn’t cooperate?

5. Do We Feel Comfortable with Them?

Your photographer will be by your side for the majority of your wedding day, so it’s crucial that you feel comfortable with them. Look for someone who makes you feel at ease and understands your vision.

As someone who loves working with people, I take pride in building strong connections with my couples. By getting to know you, I can capture your day in a way that feels personal and true to who you are.

6. What Do Past Couples Say About You?

Reviews and testimonials can offer valuable insights into a photographer’s professionalism, reliability, and ability to deliver stunning images. Don’t be afraid to ask for references or read reviews on their website or social media.

“Jess, what can I say? You’ve outdone yourself in every aspect. Your professional, kind, amazing skills have shone through in the work of art photographs you’ve produced for me and my husband for our wedding day!
Thank you so much Jess, for giving us the chance to always look back at the best day of our lives and relive the moments again and again,
we can’t thank you enough!”
